I enjoyed the first half of the volume with the culmination of the tournament but the transition to the Galactic Patrol was just meh。 We will see where it is going, but as a kick off, nothing exciting。

The tournament of power ends in the first half of this volume。 It ended how I thought it would。。 typical Dragon Ball style。。。 not surprised by that wish whatsoever。。。 but I enjoyed the arc regardless。I assume a movie happens in between the last and new arc。。。? I’m not really a fan of anime movies。 I prefer series 。。。Anyway, the next arc begins。。。 Goku and Vegeta join the galactic patrol (temporarily)。 I can’t wait to see what happens!

Yo sigo pasándomelo MUY bien!!! Y expectante con el nuevo arco。。。 😃

This was such a great volume as it serves as the finals for the tournament of power as we see Goku fighting Jiren in his ultra instinct and its such a great fight and then we have him team with Vegeta and the two fight with everything they have got and then some stuff with Jiren's approval by his master and more stuff, Freeza's second coming and 17's ultimate victory, it was a macguffin but such a great moment for Jiren where he learns team work and more good stuff for Goku and all the universe This was such a great volume as it serves as the finals for the tournament of power as we see Goku fighting Jiren in his ultra instinct and its such a great fight and then we have him team with Vegeta and the two fight with everything they have got and then some stuff with Jiren's approval by his master and more stuff, Freeza's second coming and 17's ultimate victory, it was a macguffin but such a great moment for Jiren where he learns team work and more good stuff for Goku and all the universe coming back and the end for the tournament but it was so good! And the Freeza revived and then Broly thing happens (the movie reference) and then them joining the Galactic Patrol and meeting Agent Merus to apprehend their next big threat: Moro! This arc is gonna be good as there are some cool moments and revelations that will happen next with Moro! The story was brilliant and the threats don't stop at all for them but thats what exciting! Toriyama even after 50 volumes continues to increase the hype of the series! 。。。more

El final del torneo de poder fue bastante anticlimatico。 Pero。。。 La nueva saga me deja una sensación de auténtica incertidumbre que va más allá del hecho de que todavía no hay anime sobre esta parte de la historia。

I appreciate how the manga gives Vegeta some time to shine by teaming up with Son Goku for a combo-attack against Jiren, noted by Whis as the purpose of their joint training from way back when, a rather tasty fruit grown from a seemingly unimportant seed planted circa the Golden Freeza arc (in the sense that a Goku/Beerus rematch is assumed to happen in the future, therefore Beerus wouldn't himself train the Saiyans, therefore Whis must train them himself, and it would be unfair or would at leas I appreciate how the manga gives Vegeta some time to shine by teaming up with Son Goku for a combo-attack against Jiren, noted by Whis as the purpose of their joint training from way back when, a rather tasty fruit grown from a seemingly unimportant seed planted circa the Golden Freeza arc (in the sense that a Goku/Beerus rematch is assumed to happen in the future, therefore Beerus wouldn't himself train the Saiyans, therefore Whis must train them himself, and it would be unfair or would at least look bloated for Whis to train them one by one, therefore he trains them simultaneously)。 I do still vastly prefer how the TV anime gives Freeza more time to shine and/or redeem himself by teaming up with Goku against Jiren, but at least Freeza still gets to do something important with his Death Ball and Golden dash-attack。 It's somewhat unfortunate the protracted feel of the manga version makes it so Freeza and No。17 are given less screen-time ("panel time"?), as it makes the ToP feel more strongly like "the Goku and Vegeta show" than it really should, but whatever。I like to dick around in my Dragon Ball reviews by taking the franchise extremely seriously and treating transformations and things with more gravity than I imagine is ever given by Toriyama himself。 It's just what many DB fans do, I guess。 But it's a little tricky to validate Ultra Instinct, based on the content in this volume as well as what I know of future chapters。 A big thing about UI is that holds the potential to level the playing field; Kame-sennin is aware of the "technique," but hasn't quite mastered it himself, which doesn't exactly rule Tenshinhan, Yamcha, Krillin, or anyone else from learning the technique。 In theory, anyone could grind out the ability to bullshit UI and we can have more than just the two full-blood Saiyans fighting every major battle in Super。 But we're already locked in to "the Goku and Vegeta show," so fuck you。 UI is considered a "technique," but when Goku is shown to complete it against Jiren in this volume his hair turns silver and it basically looks like a genuine "transformation。" Now, technically, we may make the excuse that the silver hair is a side-effect of a Saiyan activating an Angel technique, as all the Angels have white hair and we've seen with Zamasu there are differences between Saiyan transformations' appearances depending on whether the user is a mortal or an actual god (the divine Zamasu-Goku ["Black"] cannot go Super Saiyan Blue as his genuine god ki [as opposed to the faux-godly ki of the mortals Goku and Vegeta] is realized in the adjacent "Super Saiyan Rose" form)。 Maybe Roshi can pull off a completed UI with no discernible physical change。 Well, his beard is already white, so let's say Yamcha does it and his hair doesn't turn silver (maybe it can get the highlights of the "Sign" form), but Vegeta does UI and his hair does turn silver because Saiyan hair is weird。 This could iron things out a bit, but we'll probably not have any questions answered since Goku is the only one who plans on mastering UI while Vegeta focuses on evolving SSB and learning ki-control from the Yardrats。 As for the utility of UI。。。 I can't quite think of why Goku would need a new form other than because Toriyama didn't feel like adding a concrete new Super Saiyan form。 My "headcanon" is as follows: Goku was taught how to unconsciously dodge attacks by Mr。 Popo back in his childhood, but with the increasing threats of Vegeta, Freeza, Cell, and Boo, and with the power-level advancements from Super Saiyan 1, 2, 3, God, and Blue, he's not had the chance to attune his body to his new circumstances。 He has to re-learn how to dodge unconsciously, especially because Jiren's stupid-high power-level prevents Goku from easily grinding his own strength higher and higher during the ToP。 That is, with such a short time-frame, Goku can only learn to dodge better rather than face-tanking everything。 For some reason。 And I guess this divine agility makes sense with the great power of the Angels; Beerus spent most of the battle with SSG Goku simply dodging attacks, before they basically just started punching each other's fists, which threatened to distort the fabric of reality, so logically Beerus's teacher, Whis, should be strong enough to fuck physics up even further, thus I suppose people at his level shouldn't risk tanking a hit from another Angel, hence the magical auto-dodge technique。 Maybe。Power-levels in Dragon Ball are just weird; Freeza can survive in the vacuum of space, but he can die to a sword slash; if swords can kill people, it makes sense that Goku can get stunned out of SSB by getting shot with a laser gun; it also makes sense that Merus is able to stun Goku and Vegeta later in this very volume。 Characters' bodies are not impervious to weapons, but ki works in a weird way that a giant Kamehameha can pierce the ToP stage while only ripping the top off of Jiren's jumpsuit, but Goku shouts in obvious pain when Broly kicks his ass in the movie。 Raditz can stop a shotgun shell with his bare hands, but that doesn't mean guns can't injure a Saiyan。 Everyone in this series basically has an imaginary "health bar" that their foes whittle down over time, every battle being a war of attrition with stamina as the resource at stake。 If Jiren punches Goku in the face, Goku's head won't explode, but Jiren can crack the ground in half。 I think best case scenario is to imagine Togashi's explanation of Nen/aura in Hunter x Hunter can apply backwards to Dragon Ball, that everyone in Toriyama's franchise is subtly coating their bodies in ki auras, so they have some defense against ki attacks, and arguably against melee attacks, but not against weapons。 Maybe。Anyway, the Broly movie is confirmed to happen canonically to the manga, by which I mean the movie's events are glossed over with a single panel showing Blue Goku and Blue Vegeta versus base Super Saiyan (not Full-Powered) Broly with a description of being "a story for another time," meaning there should be no discrepancy between Toyotarou's manga and a hypothetical continuation of the TV show (though I would not be surprised if a Super Season 2 wastes a dozen episodes retreading the Broly film just to spit on us)。We also begin the "Galactic Prisoner" arc, which is thus far unique to the Super manga。 As Gegege no Kitarou and now Digimon Adventure: occupied the Super anime's former timeslot we can assume it will be a while yet before Toei resumes。 If they continue doing movies we may not get to this arc any time soon, so it's pretty cool the manga gets an original story。 Unfortunately, the arc's primary villain, Moro, doesn't seem too terribly different from past foes thus far。 He's a wizard, but all we see him do right now is telekinesis (which Freeza could do) and absorbing the life-energy of nearby planets (which Cell and Boo could both do on smaller scales)。 。。。more

Dragon Ball Super, Vol。 9 by Akira Toriyama is a free NetGalley e-comicbook that I read in late May。Ahh, great, this comic occurs during the Tournament of Champions - a storyline I’m more than familiar with - and the fight against Jiren and its aftermath。 The manga (even in black linework only) is able to capture more expression and subtleties than what the anime cartoon could, so that’s pretty impressive。 Plus, it puts a name to everyone in the team, their supporting supreme being, and Kai。

Excellent volume。 To be honest I would have been happy with just the conclusion to the tournament of power, but that is just half the book。 The next story arc is introduced。In between the tournament of power conclusions and the next story arc there is a page to acknowledge the Broly movie happened, but is not going to be covered in the main comic volumes sort of like the Resurrection F movie。The action for the conclusion of the action packed and well done。 I got a better understanding of Jiren's Excellent volume。 To be honest I would have been happy with just the conclusion to the tournament of power, but that is just half the book。 The next story arc is introduced。In between the tournament of power conclusions and the next story arc there is a page to acknowledge the Broly movie happened, but is not going to be covered in the main comic volumes sort of like the Resurrection F movie。The action for the conclusion of the action packed and well done。 I got a better understanding of Jiren's reasoning from the comics。 I also like Whis secret reason for training both Goku and Vegeta at the same time。 In the second story arc, I liked that Vegeta using tactics of watching a Galactic Petrolman getting the drop on three of the most powerful beings in 7th Universe。 Also what Vegeta is known for his pride, turning into his own form of honor。If I have one disappointment it is the Broly movie was not covered in the comic volumes。 Though I could always watch the movie again。 Looking forward to what happens next。 。。。more

My children (9 and 12) love this book, and as a middle aged reader from Dragonball in the 1990s I enjoyed this as well (though there are more characters!) The story is fun and the characters are very well developed。 I would say any public library should get this entire series, Dragon Ball Super。 It is very popular and would be read heavily。 I would almost prefer a digital copy so it would not get worn out。

I’m an old Dragonball fan but I haven’t been keeping up with Super。 I even watched GT! I quite liked this volume。 It took me a minute to figure out what was going with Jiren。 The new story is interesting。 It brings back classic stories that I remember watching and reading back in my 20s like the Frieda and Buu sagas。 It felt nostalgic。 I’m interested in getting back into DB now。
